Spotify Quietly Launches in India, Plan Starts for as Low as Rs 13

Spotify has finally made its way to the Indian market after a year-long hassle. The popular audio streaming platform silently launched its service in India without any official announcement. For those who’re unaware, Spotify first revealed its plan to expand into the Indian market in March 2018. The official launch since then has been delayed numerous times largely due to various copyright issues. Well, the company has finally expanded to India, even if it is without any official statement. Here is everything you need to know about the plans, student discounts of Spotify India and much more.

Spotify hits Indian Shores, available on Google Play and App Store

Spotify is now available for download in India on all the major platforms which include Windows, Android, Mac OS, iOS, Windows OS and Windows Phone. A number of people on Reddit posted about the availability of Spotify app on these platforms. You can download this app for free on any of the available platforms. Like in any other country, you can listen to your favourite music artist for free for as long as you want.

If for some reason you’re not getting the application on your platform, then there is no need to worry as Spotify app is slowly making its way to your store. Luckily, we were able to install Spotify on our Galaxy S9. Once you signup or login, Spotify will ask you to choose the music you like, in order to recommend you curated playlists.

We tried getting premium from the Android app but unfortunately received an error saying “Spotify is currently not available in your country”. For various users, the “Get a Premium” option is working absolutely fine. Sadly, you can’t subscribe to subscription-based offerings on iOS. This is due to the fact that Apple cuts a small amount of the fee for each subscription.

Spotify India Premium Plans, Student Discounts and Trial Period

At the time of writing, international restrictions like limited song skips and no individual song selection on Free tier doesn’t apply to India. Although this could change with time. To enjoy added benefits like offline download and unlimited skips, you’ll have to buy the Spotify Premium service. Spotify India is offering a 30-day trial period (unlike 7-day like the rest of the countries). To enjoy the Spotify premium trial, you’ll have to visit this link.

Here is the list of available Spotify premium plan in India.

  • Monthly Subscription: INR 119
  • Yearly Subscription: INR 1,189 (costing you INR 99 a month)
  • One day top-up: INR 13
  • 7 day top-up plan: INR 39
  • 1 month top-up: INR 129
  • 3 month top-up: INR 389
  • Lastly, 6 month top-up plan: INR 719

If you’re a student, you can also enjoy a special 50% discount benefit. For that, you’ll have to verify yourself as a student via Sheer. Once verified, you can buy the premium service for INR 66 for a month or INR 59 per month for a year.

Coming to the payment method, Spotify as of now is only supporting credit cards. Although we’re expecting more payment methods in the near future. You can still purchase top-up plans via UPI or Paytm. It is also worth noting that Spotify is currently not offering any type of Family premium plan in India making Apple the only one to offer.
