Google Pixel 3a: Flagship Camera at ‘Affordable’ Price

Tech giant Google hosted its Google I/O 2019 conference in Mountain View on Tuesday. Apart from Android Q and tons of new Google services, the company unveiled its much anticipated mid-range smartphones. Yes, the Pixel 3a and 3a XL, have been officially launched during the keynote announcement. With the launch of the new smartphones, Google has promised that these will deliver the same impressive cameras as the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.

Google Pixel 3a: Display, Build

Let’s take a quick look at the key specifications of the Pixel 3a. The Pixel 3a
it looks exactly like the smaller Pixel 3 and is said to be an “entry-premium” segment smartphone. The Pixel 3a features a Full-screen 5.6″ (2220 x 1080) OLED display with a pixel density of 441 ppi giving an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. With the same old school bezel-full front and the same two-tone finish on the back, we have the same colour options, Just Black and Clearly White.

Instead of the all-glass design, we see a polycarbonate back and the usual buttons (especially the coloured power button), a USB-C port at the bottom, a fingerprint scanner on the back and a 3.5mm headphone jack on board.

Google Pixel 3a: Performance, Battery

The Pixel 3a is built around the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The Snapdragon 670 is obviously no match to the Snapdragon 845 flagship chipset but also lags behind even the Snapdragon 675 and Snapdragon 710 chipsets, which we see in budget-friendly phones like the Redmi Note 7 Pro and the Realme 3 Pro.

We see a lot of cost-saving measures here as Google has ditched the wireless charging and water resistance. The Pixel 3a has a 3000mAh and comes with an 18W charger and can be charged quickly. Coming to the software, we have the latest version of Android 9.0 UI and Google’s default apps. There are other Android Pie features like Adaptive Battery, Digital Wellbeing, and more on board as well.

Google Pixel 3a: Cameras, Night Sight

One good thing about the Googe’s Pixel offering is the fact that it doesn’t skip on camera features. The device has a 12.2MP (f/1.8) rear camera, with the same Sony IMX 363 sensor that the Pixel 3 features. Just like the Pixel 3, there are no dual selfie lenses onboard here but instead, a single 8MP (f/2.0) sensor is featured. We also get Night Sight to take well-lit photos in the dark. Pixel 3a would serve the same great camera performance from the Pixel 3 and 3 XL.

Google Pixel 3a: Price in India, Availability

Google Pixel 3a is priced at Rs. 39,999 in India. It can be said that the device could be a good buy internationally, but not in India. This is because you can get a better spec-sheet at the same or even a lower price in India. A direct competition to the Pixel 3a is the upcoming Oneplus 7 which would deliver a more powerful processor, more modern design, and a larger battery. But according to Google, we get the same core experience found on its flagship smartphones but with much lower prices. CEO Sundar Pichai said “building for everyone” is a core philosophy for the company.
