With so many smartphones makers competing against each other, the competition is pretty stiff in the budget segment. The all-new Zenfone 4 series by Asus looks promising for the company. So, we decided to review the Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie which comes with the dual front camera.
Almost everyone is aware of the ongoing dual rear camera trend on the smartphones but this time you will be seeing the dual setup on the front. Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie comes in three different colour options – Black, Gold and Rose Pink. The on-paper specification of the device looks pretty good but does the device worth what the company is asking for – Rs. 14,999.
Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie arrives in two different version – one with single front cam and the other one with the dual front camera. The one which we are going to review is the dual cam version so don’t get it confused the first one.
Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie (Dual Camera) specifications
Display – 5.5-inch display with IPS Panel and 1280 x 720 Pixels
OS – Android 7.1.1, ZenUI 4.0
Processor – Snapdragon 430, 1.4Ghz Octa Core

Rear Camera – 16-megapixel, f2.2 aperture
Front Camera – 20MP f/2.0 + 8MP wide-angle camera
Battery – 3000 mAh non-removable battery
Enough with the specifications, let’s jump right into the real deal.
Design – Slim and Lightweight
We have reviewed almost every single Asus smartphone and all of them impressed in one category – design. We see some good changes in the design of the new Zenfone 4 series. The device feels very premium, smooth and is pretty lightweight. The smartphone weighs just 144g which makes the device more comfortable. For a 5.5-inch display, we don’t see such lightweight device in the market. On top of that, Aluminium finishing, curvy edges and 2.5D curved display gives more edge towards the comfort of the user.
Just above the display, there is dual front camera setup (20MP + 8MP) along with second speaker grill for your calls. The device also has a front flash which works just perfectly. Below the screen, there is a non-backlit capacitive button which is the case with every Asus device. The fingerprint sensor is present in the front sitting just under the home button. The home button is also a touch capacitive one.
The back of the device has a 16MP rear camera which has some textured design which adds up to the premium look. Just beside the camera, there is an LED flash, The silvery antenna bands on the back gives a good contrast with the colour. The back also has a shiny and silvery Asus logo embarked.
The one thing which I want to talk about the device is the colour. The one which we receive is the black one. But it isn’t actually a normal black which you see on the rest of the smartphone. It gives you more bluish kinda feel which also has glittery look. This unique colour combination makes the device look amazing and everyone at TechFAE loved it.
Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie has a 5.5-inch IPS HD display with pixel density of 267ppi. Again, there is nothing new in the display compared with the rest of the Asus smartphone lineup. The smartphone offers good colour reproduction without any doubt. You’ll find a very decent, colourful and neat display that has a good sunlight legibility, though not offering the best to read under direct sunlight conditions.
One thing which you should know is that the display is not 1080p but I guess you need to compromise somewhere to get the best out. Another thing which I noticed was that the ZenUI 4.0 does not has Asus Splendid app. You still get Bluelight filter which protects your eyes while reading in the dark.
Software and Performance
Asus Zenfone comes with its very own UI known as ZenUI on top of the Android operating system. Asus ZenUI is famous for its customizations and features. But the only thing which has always disappointed us was the excessive bloatware on the device. With ZenUI 4.0, the software layer is completely revamped for the good.
Now, you will see very less bloatware in the software. Heavy bloatware was used to be the biggest problem with their UI but happily, it is solved now. On top of that, the UI now looks pretty neat and clean. From notification panel to tiny small details, Asus did a fantastic job with their UI. The best part of using Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie is definitely going to be the smoothest and richest software experience.
Talking about the performance, the smartphone comes packed with Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC processor clocked at 1.4Ghz. The processor is pretty old but still, Asus software managed to pull the best out of it. Snapdragon 430 is quite famous for its power efficient and a good performance. Certainly, both the things when combined with ZenUI 4.0 gives amazing experience.
Zeen's Automatic Middle Of Content Ad Feature
With the 4GB of RAM inside, the device survived the multitasking without any noticeable lag. I am not much of a gamer in case of smartphones but still, I tried to play some heavy games on this device. All the heavy games perform well in medium level graphics. I used the device for more than a week and haven’t noticed any heating issue even for a small time.
Snapdragon 430 is pretty old processor and it will not fetch you top-notch performance. But, with the other plus point of the device, the smartphone is not going to let you down.
One of the things Asus Zenfone excels at is the Camera performance. Let’s first have a look at the rear camera. Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie comes with a 16MP rear camera having the f/2.2 aperture with EIS, LED Flash, and PDAF. The rear camera has all the basic function such as low light, HDR, Manual mode etc.
The rear camera did a great job and we received images with perfect colour reproduction. The pictures produced was fine with vivid and natural colours and there is no oversaturation in the pictures. In this budget segment, you can not expect much from the device and it lives up to all the expectation considering the fact that it is priced at 14,999 INR.
We are now going to talk about the main USP of this device finally. The front of the device has dual selfie camera sensor – the primary 20MP for your normal selfies and the secondary 8MP for your wide-angle group selfies. The 20MP sensor has a f/2.0 with the 5P lens while the 8MP one has f/2.4 with the 6P lens. You will also see a LED flashlight accompanying the dual camera.
The modes of the front camera include Portrait Mode, Beauty Mode, Front Camera Mode: Auto, Selfie Panorama, GIF Animation, Selfie Master Technology: Photo and Video Beautification, Live Stream Beautification, Photo collage, Mini Movie.
The performance by the front dual camera sensors is definitely the best amongst any other selfie-centric phones. The selfies taken from this device comes out to be pretty cool with little details and perfect saturation. This device also comes with real-time beautification, a feature debuted in Zenfone Live. So, now you can go live on Facebook, Instagram or any other social media with beautifications turned on.
Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie is powered by a 3000 mAh non-removable battery. For users like me, moderate and aggressive user, the smartphone will be with you throughout a day. I played some games, switched social media apps every once in a while, used 4G connection or Wifi for the whole 24 hrs and even watched Youtube. The device still manages to stretch through the whole day.
Well, you cannot expect much from the 3000 mAh battery and that too coupled with 5.5-inch 720p display.
Connectivity & Multimedia
We have almost covered all the aspects of Zenfone 4 Selfie in this comprehensive review. We still need to discuss the connectivity and of course multimedia. With Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie, we didn’t face any connectivity issues. The 4G mobile data never created a hassle for us. The call quality was just like any other smartphone.
In this smartphone, you can use dual nano-SIM card and a dedicated microSD card too. The speaker output was also not that bad. It was loud enough to give you a good experience while you are watching your favorite movie. The output from 3.5mm jack was also pretty enough to do the job perfectly.
The Zenfone 4 Selfie gives us the best performance in terms of selfie camera. No doubt, it’s the best selfie centric phone in this price range. The rear camera, looking at the budget, is again a good performer. With SD 430 and ZenUI 4.0, the device gives decent performance packed with fluent software experience.
The build quality, as usual, is the best one out there for this price range. Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie did live up to my expectation in all the aspects. Finally, I can see Asus improving and raising their smartphone game.
Should you buy it or not? Basically, it all depends on your preference and priorities. If you want a perfect selfie-centric phone, you should definitely check out this device. If you want to taste a good build quality and premium feel in the budget segment, then this device is going to be a treat for you. For 15000 INR, Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie gives tough competition to all the other competitors.
